Is there an approved substution for 8d cooler nails?

In the shear wall tables for allowable shear of gypsum sheathed shear walls there are notes that allow for the substitution of either drywall screws or #6 screws for either the 5d or the 6d cooler nails indicated in the table. Is there any published documentation that indicates what an approved substitution for the 8d cooler nails might be.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. Check IBC Table 2306.4.5 under 5/8, blocked, two ply.

It mentions there regarding the face ply 8d cooler nails that alternaters are .120" nail, min 3/8" head, 2.375" long, or 15 gage galvnized staples, 2.25" long.

Although it is not stated directly, it is implied here for a n acceptible substitution for 8d cooler nails in a single gyp application. Hope this helps.

Let me clarify a bit further. Evidently the workers no longer know how to swing a hammer and always want a screw alternative. Is there anything out there for screw substitutions for the 8d cooler nails?

Look to notes c and i of the same table. If the contractor provides a screw of the same length and equal or greater inside diameter (exclutding the threads, then it is OK.

Otherwise, have the contractor provide you with the documentation that the screw he wants to use at the spacing he wants to use equals or exceeds the shear capacity of the cooler nails. Since it is a change from what you spec'd, have him do the legwork. Otherwise, nail it.
