I was just wondering if any engineers out there have got any advice for taking the IStructE part3 examination. Any past year question or model answer wall be really useful.
Regards !

Dear Wind?,

The exam is a personal experience but the following worked for me:

The exam is about exam technique and time management and not just technical knowledge.

Review past papers. These are available from the IstructE and other engineers.

Separate the questions into the relevant parts and practice answering each part.

Practice preliminary designs for various structural systems including foundation designs.

Practice drawing skills and understand details and preliminary drawings for pricing.

Attempt full papers as you get closer to the exam under exam conditions.

Study many case studies.

Put together a little file of useful information that you are familiar with and don't take to many books into the exam because you'll never have time to read them!

During the exam plan to visit the toilet before the luch break and study the books during the actual lunch break.

Answer each part of the question. If you cannot finish a part tell the examiner what you would have done if you had time. Keep a time schedule.

Don't discuss the question after the exam.

Good luck.

Try to get a copy of " the Structural Engineer " Volume 78 No 23,24 - of 5th December 2000. It has the Examiners Report for April 2000 Part 3 exam.
Good luck
