joint coating

Hi

I'm trying to determine the coating on a stainless steel (316) joint. It is white and easily scraped off with a coin. Air is it the pipeline at about 10 bar 200 deg C.

Any help is appreciated.

other than that I'd figure on one of the commercial pipedopes.

You do not write why you are trying.
Is it good for what specifically?
Do you want to replace it as it comes off too easily?
Might it be white paint not well adhered?

If the pipe is several years old it might be "White Lead". The standard pipe dope for many years and still shows up on ocassion.
