Can someone tell me what the K2 factor in relation to timber floor joists is please? Many Thanks

The modification factor by which dry stresses and modulii should be multiplied to obtain wet stresses and modulii applicable to wet exposure conditions

Bending parallel to grain 0.8
Tension parallel to grain 0.8
Compression parallel to grain 0.6
Compression perpendicular to grain 0.8
Shear parallel to grain 0.9
Mean and min modulus of elasticity 0.8

BS 5268 Structural use of timber

Many Thanks AJUK. I am correct in thinking then that with C16 Timber this modification factor is not necessary? However, if the timber was Oak it would be prudent to apply this factor to allow for it being freshly sawn?
Rgds

These factors apply to all timbers within a wet (exposed to the outside) environment, Oak or C16! The issue you are looking at is the fact that timbers are simply not as strong when they get wet and these factors have been determined to reduce the properties accordingly.

Sorry should have stated its inside! I understand the strength issue. My question was due to the fact that I've just got some figures back where the K2 factor has been incorporated for an Oak lintel over an internal door. The reason given on the calcs is that it's >100mm. The dims of the piece of TH2 Oak are 75mm deep x 225mm wide. Hence my point about freshly sawn being wet whereas on purchase C16 is (should be!) dry. Any thoughts.............?

Does it work with wet stresses? If so, end of problem.

If not, then you need to make an engineering judgement. IMHO, I would use dry stresses as it is green but not wet.
