On August 15, 2021, about 5:29 a.m. local time, pipeline (line) 2000, a 30-inch diameter natural gas transmission pipeline owned and operated by Kinder Morgan, Inc. (Kinder Morgan) ruptured in a rural area in Coolidge, Arizona.

The linked article indicates the line was originally an oil pipeline converted to gas service. The failure was adjacent to the longitudinal weld . It is possible that the specification and QC requirements for oil pipes are not equivalent to that for gas pipelines- TBD. It is not clear if a "smart pig" could have detected a fault in the longitudinal weld after several years of accumulated deposits in oil service. 2 fatalities resulted from the fire.
