Kitchen cabinets

In a condo with kitchens that have cabinets and flush bulkheads at the top. A recessed space back to the wall, then countertop and cabinets below. Can a pendent be obstructed by that top cabinet to cover that recessed space? Here is an example of the kitchen in the picture.

I would say yes.

If your question is, if the sprinkler is in front of the cabinets, but is obstructed to the recessed space. I would say yes good.

I would say see NFPA 13,(2013 is the year I have on hand) 8.6.5.1.2 and FIGURES 8.6.5.1.2(b)(c)

NFPA 13R system. Here is a picture of the sprinkler head in question. There will be countertops and cabinets below the bulkhead. I’m just wondering if I will get called on it. Thanks for your help.

In the annex of 13R, 2013 edition:

A.6.4.6.3 Where the obstruction criteria established by this standard are followed, sprinkler spray patterns will not necessarily get water to every square foot of space within a room..............It is not the intent of the committee to require sprinklers to be installed under kitchen cabinets.

Yea somewhat legal,,,

But I as ahj would tell you to pull it out more, so you do get less obstruction.

Especially looks like a stove is part of that set up,

And, should not be a problem with another sprinkler near by????

I guess the furr down was not on the plans???

There’s another head that I was trying to keep it from cold soldering. The fur out was only supposed to be 12” and now is 24” and 16”. Some typical suites are already dry walled so I’m trying to make a decision What to do as the job is getting pushed to complete.
I feel like depending on the cabinet heights it wouldn’t cover that regardless how far back I was if it’s 36” down total. I appreciate the feedback.

13 is as much concerned about property protection as it is life safety. 13R is less concerned about property protection and more about life safety. I believe that is why the annex explains that not all areas are going to get water directly, and why there is no need to put under cabinets.

If it were my project, I would try to get the sprinkler as far from that back wall as I can, but at the end of the day, I'm not going to feel I need to rip out drywall and make a bunch of changes to that space.

I agree that I would have positioned it a bit different knowing the widths were changing. I have two heads that need to be maxed out to the allowed 16’ in the main space. If I move it in between the two lights I’m cold soldering the other head and moving it closer to a light obstructs it. There is u shaped cabinets so either way it’s obstructed. I take pride in my work and I don’t take shortcuts so, this had me scratching my head.
