Hi,
I am in the process of making some coupling selections for your project machinery. Our standards typically call out for john crane coupling (metastream) brands. However, in this situation due to lateral and torsonal analysis calcs John crane is unable to provide the right type of coupling for this application. The EPC company wishes to go with KTR (german) brand and I do not have much experience with this brand.

Are there any experiences out there and thoughts on KTR supplied couplings in terms of reliability, spare parts avaliability in north america (including canada) and other pros and cons connected with this brand over let say John Crane Metastream.

Much appreciated.
Thanks

Hello Planck121,

In Europe KTR is a very reliable brand which I use all the time when it comes to couplings. Quick deliveries, good selection tools, good quality and a wide range of possibilities. Don't know about dealers in north america. Their site may help you thereabout.

I have seen KTR couplings in eastern (Atlantic) Canada a few times, generally on equipment that has come in from Europe. Don't recall hearing of any reliability issues. If JohnCrane can't do the service, then KTR is a perfectly acceptable alternative. The client would want to stock a spare coupling, as I'm not sure how much stock any of the KTR distributors in Canada have, but they do have a distributor in Calgary to serve the oil patch, so it's quite possible they stock.

In my limited experience, I have found KTR to be reasonably priced and their staff very helpful. JC Metastream have been the utter opposite.

Are the lateral calcs discovering (excessive) radial stiffness vs potential misalignment ?
Is this a mature product installed in the traditional way?

Most of the folks involved in vibration analysis/Predictive Maintenance will report that some types of vibration are likely to increase at levels of misalignment well below that which would concern the coupling manufacturers.
