I've designed many concrete and masonry retaining walls, but never done one of those landscaping retaining walls. I understand you put soil fabric behind it and then just stack these blocks up. does anyone know of any good reference material for the design of these?

I would suggest that you get a design and construction manual from the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) as they specialize in these structures.

Usually the manufacturer of these specialty proprietary wall systems have their own technical specs and sometimes examples and computer software that go along with it. As you know, you need a contractor that has experience in this product, a geotechnical firm that can gauge the soil parameters and you still will have to use judgement and factor some of the manufacture's strength values for geogrid tensile strength for example-the long term performance of which is not yet known.
