I need help with a design question.
Case:
Installing a 48" diameter nozzle in a 144" ID (.625 wall carbon stl.) vessel built to Sec. VIII Div 1. UG-36(b)(1) refers you to Appx 1-7 or 1-10 to calculate a large diameter opening. Per my software, the nozzle is failing under 1-7. However, the customers engineer says he can make the nozzle work under Div 2 Part 4.5. He is sighting U-2(g) as his basis for using this Div 2 calculation.
Question: Is it the intent of U-2(g) to allow the use of a Div 2 calculation in this case?
My initial thought was no. However; the last paragraph in 1-10(d) leads me to believe it is allowed.
Follow up question: This will work if I increase the shell thickness to 1-1/4" Can I use a locally thickened shell section in the nozzle area (in addition to the re-pad)? How would you simulate or calculate this in the program? I am using Advance Pressure Vessel.
