Can I use laser as a heat source to heat up some medium?

I think you have to be more specific. What medium, what length of time and any other info you can offer.

Medium is stainless steel, length of time is at least 8 hours.

Heating stainless steel for 8 hours with a laser doesn't sound very practical. Not knowing what temps that you need to achieve you would need a large laser such an Excimer laser that puts out high energy and a laser would not give consistant heating thru your medium.<br>

I would stick with conventional means such as water thru a heater etc... which you could control easier.<br>

Hello,
I want clarification for this. If i use laser as a heat source, for modeling in FEM, how can i convert the laser power as heatflux to apply in a particular element of FEM mesh.
Please clarify this
