I am trying to find an alternative to machining a slot through a steel nut using a slot mill.

Can anyone tell me if this would be possible to achieve using laser cutting, and point me in the direction of equipment that may be capable of this.

The nut is M16, 24mm accross flats. I need to find the diameter capability and depth capability of the relevant machniery if this is possible.

Many Thanks,

Matt.

If you are cutting across the threads, laser cutting, plasma cutting and flame cutting all have molten metal that sprays off the bottom of the cut and dross or slag that hangs from the bottom of the cut. This material is quit hard so running a tap through it is not a good idea.
If you have a drawing in an electronic format, try; I have used this site for subcontracting out parts I can’t do or in larger quantities, to get the best price.

What's the volume of the parts and what's the cycle time?
There are few options like punching, broaching, hot stamping etc. Contact me if you need more help.

Have you considered a waterjet? Depending on volume and/or other projects you could use it on it may be a viable option. You will be surprised at the speed, ease of use, and accuracy of these machines.

you might want to look at wire edm if you need acuracy
(0.0002). can be set up to do fairly good quantity and
needs no secondary cleanup.

Try to find a shop running a water jet, they may do this

Why? Slot milling is your most cost-effective method for low volume, broaching is the best for high volume. Is it the burr that concerns you?

Hi wannadie .
