Laser Scanning

We are considering the purchase of laser scanning equipment. If you have experience in the selection and use of the same to ultimately get to a solid model in UG, your insights would be appreciated.

So far, we have only looked at the Minolta Vivid 910 scanner and GeoMagic Shape Studio software.

Be prepared spending lots of time manipulating point clouds, splines & re-fitting faces. I feel UGS Imageware is more suited for this than UGNX is.

From my experience the Geomagic is the most versatile product in market as far as revese enginering.
UG in itself is not suitable for that, Imageware yes but that is more compleks software that is used also for free form design etc.
GeoMagic is strictly reverse enginering software, after you create the surfaces you can export for UG or any other software.
As far as the laser scanin device I need more info for giving you an opinion, like what products do you have to scan, what size, and what tolerance do you need to reach.
Do you need a mobile scaner or a fix one. Without this information I can not give you any specific answer.

Sould have done that up front.

The primary products we work with are castings. Most will will fit in an envelope of 6x6x18 inches. Most of our dimensional tolerances are +/-.030 and +/-.015. Rarely there is a +/- .005 dimension. There is no need for portability of the equipment.

So far we have noticed that the output surfaces contain numberous "self-intersecting geometry" errors. With some effort, the number has been reduced to the range of 15-20 such errors. Another difficulty presented, is that none of the surfaces appear planar.

As always, any thoughts are appreciated.
 
I have worked with a company that is using an optigo200 with geomagic.

It looks pretty good and we usually get a xyz point cloud and a stl from them.

What we do is create a model in UGNX2.
 
Please dont buy a milnota scanner you will regred it, I've worked with both laser scanners and white light scanner. the Minolta is good for art work were accuracy does not matter if you are look to reverse engineer in the 0.001 - 0.004" range white light is the way to go. I definenatly recommend the Stienbichler white light scanner

I must echo the thoughts of sheidebrecht with respect to the Minolta Vivid 910 scanner. The accuracy was an issue when I gained my experiece with this scanner.

I have utilized Imageware and also GeoMagics.

GeoMagics is FAR easier to use and get usable surfaces. Imageware was extremely TEDIOUS to get any results.

Finally, the cost of GeoMagics is much more reasonable.

I have done so much research on this very thing over the past few months I think it is coming out of my ears. If you want to simplify things, try a product called HighRes Industrial. This product works within UG and the piece you scan is recognized as native UG data. There are a couple more apps I am considering as well. Have you looked at Delcam's PowerInspect?

I have been working on a lot of reverse engineering jobs lately. They are coming from an optigo 200 white light scanner. From there they use geomagic to generate an stl.
The optigo I believe has 3 cameras compared to the other scanner which has only 2. Our customer says this is better.

How does the Highres Industrial work? Is the software for scanning or for manipulating stl files withing UG? Right now, what we do is cut sections along the stl, cut another section on the curves to generate points that have a regualar pattern, the create our surface by using "from point cloud" in UGNX2
