Hello,

For steel beam bending design, I was always under the impression that the compact/slenderness checks were only in AISC table B4.1b and that B4.1a does not apply. Today I heard someone mention that both B4.1a and B4.1b should be checked.

B4.1b seems to be appropriate since it is for members subject to flexure. If I am incorrect, could someone direct me to a reference to clear things up for me?

Thanks

Table B4.1a is used to determine if the web as well as the flanges are NONSLENDER or SLENDER for COMPRESSION which is used in Chapter E to determine which section applies.

Table B4.1b is used to determine if the web as well as the flanges are COMPACT, NONCOMPACT, OR SLENDER for FLEXURE which is used in Chapter F to determine which section applies.

So if you are checking a beam strictly for flexure then you only need to consider Table B4.1b.
