Layers Issue

Hello,

I use layers to separate components in an assembly. I also use existing models and save as for new models. I noticed that if I assign a new layer name that is identical to an existing layer that I've named, then after that moment, when you change either layer's name, they both change. How do I separate that relationship? Using NX9

I assume that you are talking about layer categories. You can create and name categories and assign one or more layers to the category. If you are right clicking on a layer and using "rename category", you are renaming the category - not the actual layer.

If you want to separate out layers that belong to the same category, you will need to create a new category, remove the layer from the old category, and add it to the new one. Turning on the "category display" option may help you visualize what's happening.

Who advised you to use Layers to segregate Components in an Assembly? This is a bit limited in that the vast majority of Assemblies could easily exceed the number of available Layers. Now you might gain some order by maybe 'grouping' common Components by Layer, like fasteners versus electrical items etc. But that being said, you could also use actual Component Groups or filters based Attributes preassigned to the prototype parts. I always recommended using Attributes when asked, since if the Attributes were assigned to the original prototype part then as additional components of a said type are added, they would automatically be included when you would use a filter based on Attributes versus having to make sure that Component was placed on the intended Layer.

Cowski - Thanks for the info, I will work on that, and I do think I can figure it out from here.

John - I know you are correct. Our group is not utilizing UG as effectively as we could, and being new, this is how we are trained to do it here; however, with what you mention, this is something I need to learn how to do, so that I can approach every design in this method. We design custom fixtures for every job; however, I am certain that we could have components that could be easily modified and then saved as a different component, then use these components in assembling the fixture. I'm not sure how to approach beginning this new way of designing yet (new meaning, for our group).
