Are LCD monitors good enough for CAD (i.e. with SolidWorks)?

If yes, what brand and size?

If no, why not. I'm assuming that price is not the issue. Quality of the image is the main concern.

Hello,

LCDs are great for SolidWorks, but they are different from CRTs. To me it is a matter of personal preference.

I would recommend at least a 17", but you may want bigger. There are many brand names, please visit the following link it has many excellent reviews:

I would also recommend that you try an LCD out before purchasing, note that there are differences. Here is a great article that lists the differences between an LCD and a CRT:

Here are some great points from the article above...

CRTs display more colors, something to consider if you are doing shadows and renderings

CRTs are better at display moving images, something to consider if you are doing animations.

CRTs show images at any angle, your eyes have to be at the right angle to view an image in an LCD.

LCDs have a crisper image (thanks to the pixel technology)

LCDs don't flicker (this is better for your eyes)

LCDs display a perfect image geometry (according to the article, I haven't tested this)

Hope this helps.

Joseph,

Many, many thanks for your comprehesive comments. I read the link that you suggested as well and learned about several new types of displays that are coming... e.g. touch sensitive flat displays where you draw directly on the display, and a combination of back-projection for a very large display combined with an inset magnified area on a high resolution monitor. (However, I won't wait for these)

I'll use my own eyes as the final test.
