My name is Robert Leeman, I'm based in Germany working for an independant design development company just outside Stuttgart. Currently I am working on a design project that involves designing the next Renault Alpine 110.

It is my intension to design a fully leaning body vehicle with more scope than recent vehicle developments such as the Mercedes F400 or Alfa Centauri. With independant F/R axles connected under the monocoque, somewhat like a skate-board's construction, the brief requires me to make this more than just an interesting, fun but useless concept for wealthy drivers, is is intended for motorsport!

The basic package is a mid-engined 4WD system whos upper monocoque should be the only section to move independantly of the axels. the front and rear axles have a seperate under body monocoque spanning between the wheels to accomodate the suspension, transmission and other ansillories. In this way the two act together to create a ridgid structure.

The reason for this particular vehicle concept is two-fold, primarily the upper body's surface should create unique aerodynamic characteristics to allow the vehicle greater dynamic downforce through any given corner. In a similar way to F1 stock-cars with their specialised "Left-turn" aerodynamics.

Secondly this is an attempt to develop a new B or even group S rally class. The vehicle and it's construction has been decided upon to be a fully fleged attempt to raise the profile of the WRC to that of F1.

If anyone is able to help by providing some answers or even advice on this project I would be very greatful. My technical support on this project is limited at the moment and I need some answers quickly. I require some information in the folowing areas, diagrams ant tips on implementation would be great:

-Aerodynamics through a corner, any principles to improve the event of non-liniar laminar flow.

-Examples of existing leaning body chassis construction, or any concept developments of swing body monocoque's etc...

-Examples of hydraulic systems that could prove to have enough power and responsivness to deal with the imput required.

Check out Aurora Vehicle's solar car for an example of a rigid tricycle chassis with a body suspended from that.

I did work on a supercar and a showcar for one manufacturer that was basically a rolling spine chassis/powertrain, with the body suspended from that. Careful examination of show car reports from the late eighties and early nineties might find it - we built three, one was a runner the other two were show cars.

It is an attractive idea although of course it is illegal under F1 rules, I don't know about rally cars.
