I'm thinking about leaving my first job. The benefits are a little lacking and the commute is starting to take it's toll (more on my car than me)

I was wondering if anyone has any advice for how to carry this out.

Should I tell my employer that I'm looking?

Can I use them as a reference?

If I need to take a half day to interview, what should I say?

You should write your boss a letter stating your intent to look for another job. Then have a lunch with everyone to celebrate you new job search and then take personal time to go to interviews. When your boss objects call in sick the day of the interview. Also start neglecting your responsibilities since you aren't going to be there as soon as you find another job. Your company will appreciate your honesty and will be very sorry such a valuable employee is leaving.

40+ years ago, there were massive layoffs of Engineers, primarily in aerospace but also in steel and aluminum manufacturing. Some Engineering schools shut down. Many Engineers left the discipline - never to return.

Like the others said. Start looking discreetly. Don't even tell your friends at your current job. People talk. They always talk. People also hear things.

Leaving your job right now is like going to prison in some ways. Don't stare at anyone, cause any problems. Watch your feet, and your mouth and get your work done. The more ruckus you create, the more likely you are to get shivved in regards to your next job. I.E. Old boss calling new company to say not nice things about you. Or, old boss finding cause and terminating you early.

Most company's are not happy when their people leave.
