Morning all (or afternoon depending on your time zone :) )

I have an old exciter in the workshop that has come in with wiped bearings, after some extensive research with the owner we've found that the bearings were originally lemon bore but were machined over years as a plain bearing - but no sizes!

Is there a standard ratio between the top and side clearance ?

Tony.

its squashed, so that the top clearance is reduced in comparison to the side - it introduces a degree of pre-load and aids stability but IIRC it can introduce susceptibility top oil whirl.

Hello
no - the ratio of the clearance depnds upon the operating parameters of the bearing.
a very crude rule is 2-4 times the clearance on one axis/ load line comapred to the axis - but the number can vary hugely dependent upon application.
