Library Part Security

We have purchased parts we are saving off into a common library to allow everyone to utilize common purchased parts from a common location. The situation is that by being a library part when you open (or insert) the item you can't alter it directly. A good thing. The issue is we can open any file from here, do a Save Copy As and save it to our workspace, open the local copy, alter the heck out of it, then Save Copy As and directly over write the library file. Not really secure.

How does anyone else handle security for library parts so it's not cumbersome to use but protects the parts from "accidents"???

I have noticed the exact problem you describe where 'save copy as' allows a library to be overwritten - I will check this out. I assume that the project you were working in actually does have the folder tree where the original library part was in its library definition.

Given that has been an oversight by Autodesk in this area it would not be difficult to set the permissions on the library tree to be read only to most users (certainly those who ought not to be overwritting files).

I know this would bypass the nice way of managing libraries by having projects deliberately setup where what is normally the libray path is setup as being the main project file area.
