Hello all,
i'm a chemical Engineer graduated from a university outside the USA and the NCEES agreed with a university in my country to offer both the FE & PE exams for local engineers.
i'm taking the FE exam next October and i have those questions;
1) what will happen next if i pass the FE exam, i mean to whome should i to apply to get the title EIT?
2) if i take the PE exam and pass it, will i be licenced PE in the united states and if yes in which states?

your feed back is highly appreciated.

If you are residing in a particular state in the United States, you would have to check with that state's licensing board, but more than likely in the state in which you reside for both the questions.

i'm currently residing outside of the united states, could i choose whatever state i wish?
also what will i gain from being EIT?!!

You will likely have to choose a state, apply to the state to take the exam, then have the exam administered by NCEES. Some states might not accept this. Check with NCEES to see which states will cooperate.

Having the EI designation is one major step in obtaining licensure. It is better to take the FE exam when in school than to wait until later to take both exams.

I thought you could have the PE before, but needed EIT to say you are a professional engineer, and use your stamp, etc.

You need to apply to take both the FE (EIT) and PE exams through a state board. For instance, see the requirements and forms here for New Mexico:
"also what will i gain from being EIT?!! ", in some industries, nothing more than a piece of paper to hang on the wall, in other industries it shows you are on the path to getting a PE.

There is more to getting a PE than just taking the exam; you have to have relevant work experience documented by professional references. Plus you need to get the particular state to accept your degree. Some states are pickier than others (no this does not make any sense but it is the way it is).

You may want to pose this question to NCEES. Most likely answer would be to check with the state you want to be licensed in. Most state may require that you be at least a resident of USA (not sure).

Every state requires separate application to its licensing board. Each one of them has slightly different requirements. But most would accept exams approved by NCEES, if other criteria are met.

thanks for your answers, also i want to know, if i pass the FE exam and licienced as an EIT in a state can i work there even if i'm graduated from a university outside the USA.
i visited the NCEES web site but couldn't find the section to send them mails regarding my questions!!!

If you have a work permit, you can work with or without EIT or PE for an employer. Just that you cannot stamp the drawings and cannot offer your services as a professional to public.

i thought that you can't work in the states unless you have graduated from an accredited university by the ABET!

you may need a degree to get a work permit, but you will have to inquire with Immigration on what the requirements would be. I doubt that they would require ABET for your permit. We have foreign workers doing CADD work for our company under a work permit and they have no engineering degree at all.

ChemEng84,

You've touched on several topics that I'd like to help clarify:

a) Qualifications to work as an engineer in the USA - It is all varied here in the USA. Some engineering jobs require PE licenses, some require PHDs, some master's degrees, some batchelors degrees and some experience only. Its up to the employer to choose the person who suits their specific needs.

b) Licensure - NCEES does not give PE licenses, they create the exam. Its the individual states in the USA that give licenses. If you want a PE license, contact the states individually [there is no (1) USA PE license that covers all the states]. As stated above, licensure is not a requirement for most engineering jobs in the USA, just certain ones.

can't express my gratitude for your valuable answers.
especially EddyC your answer really cleared alot of things to me
