Dear Export
I need your help. i plan to lifting the silo from site to repair it in the workshop but the welding inspector witnessed the weld on the lifting lug by visual test (VT), as shown in the attached picture of defect
He should stop lifting work and inform to repair the lifting lug urgently before lifting work
Do we really need it? We have to complete the repair according to the picture first. I would like to know how to calculate the lifting lug with this weld defect.

Are those even weld defects per se? Or are they where a shackle ear has abraded and gouged into the weld?

It is trivial for a structural engineer with a copy of BTH to analyze this and prove adequacy for a given load, especially given the location of the "defect".

The question for you will be whether that would satisfy your welding inspector, or whether he would still hold the work until the weld is "repaired".

Agreed. I don't see a 'defect' and even if it was a defect then simply calculate the capacity assuming XXmm of weld is not effective. If things were suitably designed then I would highly doubt you'll have an issue.

One comment however. That welding lug is VERY thick compare to the welds IMO. Either the lug is oversized (possibly for unexpected lateral loads) or the welds are undersized. Without knowing the loads it is impossible to say.

Lugs can be very thick for things like bearing effects under the BTH requirements if you don't want to use cheek plates. I've used silly looking plate thicknesses for small installs where it didn't worth the effort to machine and weld the cheek plates.
