Not sure if this is the best location in the forum to post this question:
The WRC-107 analysis done for a lifting trunnion assumes that the trunnion is connected to the shell and calculates the stress in the shell and in the pad if a pad is used.

I have a situation where I want to weld the trunnion only to the pad. The stresses in the trunnion would be the same but the effect on the vessel would be different as only the pad is transferring the load to the vessel.

Would it be unreasonable to use WRC-107 for this configuration?

No ideas are rejected, as this forum is a place to share ideas, but ultimately one has to make their own engineering decisions backed up by science and certainly the ideas have influenced the outcome. This thread's origins are regarding the application of WRC-107. Thanks to all who have gave of their time.

Final implementation as follows: large trunnion is welded direct to the tank with the pad to reinforce the tank wall. Welding the trunnion to the pad only was too risky. The pad is large to distributes the bending moment. The WRC-107 results checked out OK in "Compress", but in addition a stiffener is added just below trunnion in place of temporary internal transport frame. I will put up a photo of the lift in few weeks time...
