Hello,

Every Light Gauge manufacturer has design tables for various applications. Is there a common source for light gauge design procedures. More importantly is the source available for free. Tables are very limited in their usefulness.

Thanks

I don't think there is a manual like the AISC manual. I use the "Light Steel Framing Manual", by The Steel Network. It covers about everything. You can go to AISI for more information and codes and standards.

AISI publishes the "Cold-Formed Steel Design Manual". Unfortunately, it's not free.

By the way, The manual I use is free. But it is proprietary.

You really need to work from the adopted code to be able to deal with all the situations that come up. For instance, a stud that does not work with bracing at 48 inches o.c. might work with bracing at 36 inches o.c. Chances are the tables won't cover this. They are, buy nature, very limited. The AISI has a design manual, as mentioned before. The sizes it uses are not the SSMA standard gauge thicknesses however. I never found any use for it.

I use the SSMA table for properties. It has some tables in it as well, that, of course, conform to the SSMA standard stud nomenclature and material thicknesses. Many manufacturers use this standard so I find it much more useful.

Click on "Tech Catalog" on the left side.

Not sure if it helps, but there is a British Standard for thin gauge sections: BS5950 Part 5: Code of practice for design of cold formed thin gauge sections.
