lightening existing beams

I am looking for any available reference regarding removing material (most likely circular hole sections) from a steel I beam that exceeds the needed capacity. Weight is an issue in the design of a platform structure, and I am seeking to lighten the existing beam by cutting sections out of the web. The load capacity can be reduced, but the reduction of capacity must be known. Any info as to hole shape, size, spacing etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The weight of the material that you would be able to remove from the beam would be neglible in the overall scheme of things. The labor cost for removing material would also be high. Cutting the holes with torches further compromises the integrity of the beam. I HIGHLY advise against it as you, in the event of failure, jeopardized your personnel's lives.

It may be possible to replace the beam w/ a lighter one and be less expensive. Still expensive though.

Hire a structural engineer and discuss the parameters you need for the design. I seriously doubt, when taking platform live loads into account, the weight of the beam will be an issue.
