Hi All,

Does anyone know about the Limitation of Horizontal and vertical Displacement of Soil and Retaining Wall in Canada. As i found in the Buidling Code 2012 but it not specifically.

Please help to give me some information on this.

I work on the geotechnical foundation side of things in Ontario to provide a ULS based on the Canadian bridge code or CFEM method and the SLS is estimated for 25 mm of total settlement for the foundation. With a layout for differential settlement the SLS can be specified using the limiting values provided in the CFEM to prevent structural damage.

The first stage of site investigation is desktop and it informs the engineer of the anticipated subsurface conditions. By precluding the site investigation the design engineer cannot accept any responsibility for providing a safe and economical design.

Hi. Tks for your share. But pls give me more details about CFEM. Es, the horrlizontal disp. Of dwall.

Hi again, the CFEM is the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, it is used by most of the Canadian geotechnical firms.

I am not sure what your most recent comment on horizontal disp. Of dwall means. My experience and expertise is in the design the foundations which is used by the wall designers, typically structural firms. Wall designers follow the building code to work out the various load conditions to determine if there design meets the factor of safety. I am not aware if there is a building code value provided for horizontal displacement, but a structural engineer might know better. That said displacement and settlement requirements can be imposed by an owner (private or government) or building department.
