Hello all

I am new to SAP2000 and this forum, and I have few questions which I divided into several threads. Some of you will surely find these questions very easy, but please take some time and help if you can. I tried to find answers in manuals and here on forum but i couldnt.

Question is: I have an area element and it is part of upper deck of a bridge which I model using area elements, but we can discuss general area element as well. How to apply some line load on this element?

I can divide it into smaller elements so that the line load would act practically on the edge of one of area elements if it is necessary, but somehow I think that this is not a right approach.

gracias

Nobody can help with this problem?

Can you at least tell me please if this question is too easy to be answered or is it impossible to do it? I cant believe nobody ever needed to put line load on a shell element.

I use version 11, if that matters.

gracias again

Draw a frame element and make sure it lies on the line that has nodes on the shell. In version 11 you dont need to divide the line. But you need to make sure it exactly lies on the nodes.

Reduce the stiffness of the frame element considerably by assigning a very weak section, very very weak. This makes sure that all loads will go to the shells as expected.

Then assign your line load on the frame element.

If you are into bridges, and you have time, please read the software manuals, examples in the software and see if you can benefit from the bridge module that comes with Sap2000. YOu got to have time for that serious learning.

Pals here are very helpful, real friendly ones too. They have helped me a thousand times before. Lets thank them in advance.

hi govedoonobrdsko

You can do that easy
you just define frame element but in section property select NONE property.
and assign load to this frame with NONE property and it will works.

great tip zstone. works on versions above 11 or earlier too?

zstone,
thanks for the hint, but somehow it will not work with my bridge modeler v11. I will have to test this idea a little bit more into details now. Anyways, thanks for answering.
