Hello

I am working on a project and need to design pressure vessels which are under caustic service with a design temperature of 350F. MOC for pressure vessel is SA 516 Gr 70.

Can anybody please suggest me the lining material that can be used for this service and the installation procedure?

Thanks

What's the operating temperature and what strength caustic?

Hello TD2K

Operating temperature is 336F and 11% NaoH with NaCl.

Application of nickel alloy should be used. See the chart:

I am restricted to use Carbon steel material for vessel. "Ni" alloy will be way costly and not allowed to use. I did some literature survey and found some epoxy lining available in the market like high temp. epoxy novolac, epoxy paint etc. but I am not experienced with any of those. So, just need exact lining material for the described operating temperature and caustic service.

Please suggest.

I have no experience with caustic at that temperature so I can't help you. If you don't get any specific recommendations, I would start talking to coating companies and see what they suggest. This would definitely be an area you want to get references where their products have been used and talk to their references how the product has held up. Make sure their conditions are similar enough to yours that their experience is applicable.

You could also talk to some chlor-alkali companies who make 50% caustic. I worked in one such plant during the summer (many years ago) and we stored 50% caustic in some pretty large storage tanks though they weren't nearly as hot as your service. They might have some coating experience and while it is unlikely to be as high as temperature as your case, it might give you some leads.

Thanks TD2K.

Your suggestion will definitely help.

Talk to lining companies, and start writing the emergency plan.
At the first coating failure your vessel will crack so quickly that everyone will panic.

Seriously, these are either built of solid Ni alloys or Ni alloy clad onto steel plate.

I'm not a coating expert, sorry, can't help you pick a liner.

Couple of questions, I'm assuming the fluids are what can be in this vessel at different times. 32% HCl and 36% NaOH won't be that for very long if you mix them before it gets very hot in a neutralization reaction.

You have a maximum working temperature of 40C and a design temperature of 100C. Typically, I would pick a coating good for the design temperature, that's however a big margin and could definitely affect what coatings are suitable. I would review what temperature you want the lining to be able to handle and set that as the design temperature if it's not 100C.
