What should the design Live Load be for a 2nd floor locker room above a manufacturing facility. It is the only room on the 2nd level (really more of a mezzanine almost). Stairs from below are the only access. Also a reference or path of reasoning would be appreciated. Location is IL, USA

Thanks.

IBC 2006 says elevated platforms are 60 psf.

If the lockers are going to be "full" of "heavy stuff and you expect a lot of people - then go to 100 psf.

But if it is just a "changing" or showering area - 60 would be enough - I think.

Thanks Mike that sounds reasonable.

Somehow I read over the LL in the IBC 4 times and missed that every time.

A couple of things further here:

In ASCE 7, Table 4-1, under "Office Buildings", the first two lines set the tone for design where it says "File and computer rooms shall be designed for heavier loads based on anticipated occupancy", but does not specify the design load. That is left up to the judgement of the engineer to be based upon the occupancy, distribution, and weight of the equipment.

Also, consider AISC 4.8.4, Special Occupancies, where it states that "Live loads of 100 psf OR LESS shall not be reduced in public assembly occupancies.

Also in the same Table 4-1, under "Assembly Areas and Theaters", is the recommendation for 150 psf for "Stage Floors". Considering how much acting that goes on in a locker room, you might want to consider this value too.

The design load for compactus zones varies between 150-200 psf. I don't see the need to design zones housing personal lockers for anything more than 100psf.
