Hi, I have to calculate strength( stresses) on a square steel plate (24" x24") with four supports on the corners and hole(4") in the middle. Plate is 3" thick. Laod applied is 500k lbs.

thanks savalakh

The answer is infinite stresses, if you calculate it properly. Incidentally, where is the load applied?

Sounds like homework to me, actually. If you need reasonably close answers, use finite element method, should be a simple problem there. Otherwise, split the plate crosswise or on a diagonal, sum moments about that axis, and you can find the average stress along that line.

In the site below you find a form to calculate plates supported at the corners (Plates -> Simple bending -> Rectangular -> 4 corners).
There is no hole there but as the hole is small and the center of the plate is uniformly bent in two directions, you can use the formula provided by Roark for that condition: it tells you that the maximum stress around the hole is two times the stress without a hole.

Thanks all.
Prex that link is really useful. I will look for the Roark formula.
