I am trying to develop the capacity of the roof joists of an existing building located in Oregon. I have the original construction documents dated 1962, and they specify the joists as “18LA 10 STL JOISTS @ 8’-0” O.C.” They span 35’-0”. I know these are not in production anymore, but anyone has access to old design catalogs that could provide their capacity it would be really helpful.

My research to date shows: In 1966 LJ- Series replaced the LA- Series, then in 1978 there was an elimination of J-, LJ-, and DLJ- Series and Introduction of Joist Girders.

I have already attempted to contact Vulcraft, but they are not proving to be very prompt in replying. I figured I would try here also.

Nevermind. Vulcraft just emailed me the Load Tables and Specifications for the LA-Series as requested.

Steel Joist Institute (SJI) has a manual of all the known sizes going back decades. You can buy it from their website.

Also - they have an interactive program on their website that is quite helpfull for these situations.
