Hi all,

I'm currently working on a project (UK based) in which we have a crane trafficking very close/parked adjacent to a manhole.
Are there any general rules/requirements that dictate the maximum permissible loads adjacent to manholes or is there a typical calculation approach to prove the manhole is okay/not?

Our concern is against lateral movement of the manhole due to the imposed load.

A bit of background, we have done a conservative assessment of the effects of the crane outriggers on manholes for proposed lift works by treating the imposed load as acting on the fill material behind a wall to obtain a horizontal pressure distribution. The manholes influenced by these effects are deep and have significant diameter thus offer greater resistance to lateral earth pressures from the imposed loads.

When we apply the same approach to shallow manholes for the effects of the crane wheel axels our Factory of Safety against 'sliding' is inadequate.

We have passed the problem onto our Geotech department to review however this seems like a common check (heavy plant drive past manholes on construction sites all the time) but we've been unable to find any guidance or standards (UK based).

Any knowledge people have would be greatly appreciated from a self learning view and to aid in similar issues in the future.

Thanks
