I presently work in a facility that has automated cranes. The cranes are powered through a 4 wire 480 VAC overhead power rail that is 80 feet about the power distribution enclosure. My question is; is a local disconnect required at the maintenance platform where repairs are preformed for the power rail and the brush assemblies for the crane?

NEC Article 610. It has specific requirements for disconnecting means for cranes and hoist.

Basically, you need a lockable disconnect at ground level for the feed to the rail, AND another disconnect on the platform where the feed FROM the rail goes to the hoist, etc.

Because your 480 V panel is more than 50 feet away, it is not considered "within sight" even though you might be able to see it.

Hi there, I agree with "dpc". Also check NEC 610.32.
