Hi - I'm a part professional /part hobbyist Solidworks user recently upgraded to Solidworks 2003. I use Solidworks in my professional area to 'model' equipment designs for presentation to clients (I'm an industrial ceramist and design kilns , stoves etc:) nothing too elaborate but enough to 'sell' ideas and good enough for costing purposes etc: I also have a keen hobby interest in woodworking and home construction projects and tend to use Solidwords again for modelling mock ups of ideas I have. I'm looking for a decent book and also online tutorials that can expand on using Solidworks for modelling projects not specifically involved with mechanical engineering .

I'd appreciate any ideas on this .......

thank in advance

Jimmex,

I recently purchased the Inside Solidworks 2003 book by David Murray. It covers the basics of solid modeling as well as goes into a little more depth on features of using SW2003. It stays away from the in depth mechanical stuff that you don't need. It is a good book for beginner to intermediate users. You can find it at Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.

Thanks Scorch for replying - I was thinking about that book because a couple of years ago when I first started using Solidworks I bought Inside Solidworks 2nd Edition and it helped me a lot tolearn the basics of the program. I just wondered if the lastest version repeats much of what I already know from the the earlier one. I'd like to find a book (if there is such a beast!!) which deals more with the newer aspects of SW 2003 - covering intermediate to advanced level with some example projects showing different aspects of using SW. In searching through the internet I've not found anything to date however I keep coming across good reviews of Inside Solidworks 2003 so maybe I'll go for it if only to see what updated info it has.

Thanx again for the help

Other books to look at are

1) Engineering Design with SolidWorks 2001Plus
2) Assembly Modeling with SolidWorks 2001plus/2003

They are wrote by David C. Planchard and Marie P.
Planchard, which I have and have gone through. Very good books.

When in doubt, always check the help

Thanx Scott - appreciate your 2 cents! I'll give them a look.

Thanx again Scott - its always good to have ´specific´links to professional books as the usual searches through Amazon and B&N only pull up the high volume titles- this site certainly has some good reading matter for most of the popular CAD apps and is a site worth chceking back at now and again for updates....

appreciate your help

Jim

Check out e-bay I have seen official solidworks training manuals offered. If you can get your hands on them these are the best by far and they have manuals for everything froms basic parts, assemblies, and drawings to animator. This is a super powerful program and will take time to master. Have fun.
