The length between anchorages is 1451 m (4760 ft) and the length of the center span is 1067 m (3500 ft). At the center the bridge is 65 m (212 ft) above the river. The bridge has a width of 36 m (119 ft), of which 27 m (90 ft) is used for roadway. The upper level carries eight lanes of motor-vehicle traffic and two footways, and the lower roadway, completed in 1962, has six lanes for motor-vehicle traffic. The upper roadway is suspended from four steel cables, each 91 cm (36 in) in diameter and composed of 26,474 wires. The total weight of cable wire is 25,673 metric tons. The cables are carried by saddles on top of two 184-m- (604-ft-) high steel towers. The bridge is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

"George Washington Bridge," Microsoft(R) Encarta(R) 98 Encyclopedia. (c) 1993-1997 Microsoft Corporation.
