Loose body-flange weld throat dimension ?

First of all Hi to everyone!

I am designing a TEMA AES type heat exchanger.

I am trying to calculate the required weld throat for the body flanges.
Body flanges are loose type flanges and as per ASME VIII Div.1 , Figure 2-4, (3a) the min. weld throat should be 0.7c.

Therefore, the weld throat should be the same for the body flange at stationary tube sheet, with the body flange at rear end (shell cover).

It seems pretty strange to me that the governing dimension here is the thickness of the shell and not (also) the outside diameter of flange.

Is there any other section, appendix to calculate the weld throat dimension?

Thank you for your kind cooperation in advance.

Recommended for you

C = bolt‐circle diameter
c = basic dimension used for the minimum sizing of
welds equal to tn or tx, whichever is less

Use "c" not "C"

No, you are bound by Mandatory Appendix 2.

Not sure what you are getting at here, 0.7c is a minimum size, you are free to go larger if you like.

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

@ SnTMan.
Yes, I agree that 0.7c is a minimum size. But still, this means that the Outside diameter of the flange is not a parameter to the weld dimensions...?

B.Regards,

Ian.

No, why would it be?
