Here's the problem...

I need to extend and contract two cylinders.
Much like the spring loaded part that holds a toilet roll but I can’t use a spring.

What I’m looking for is a thermal expander that when one end is heated (low heat) the unit will expand. Once it cools the unit will contract. And the whole unit is about the same size on the before mentioned toilet roll holder.

Does anyone have any ideas? Or can you point me in the right direction?

Best regards,

Rhue

Recommended for you

Wax (think of a car's coolant thermostat)
Bi-metallic strips
shape memory alloy

Need more info like amount of force required,etc..
What is meant by low heat?

The force required shouldn't be much (lifting less than 3 ounces).
It needs to extend about 4 inches.
Temperature is between 500 and 600 degrees celcius.

Any ideas will help.

Thanks again,

Rhue

Gas Piston? I have the same question as desertfox, is the temp cycling between room temp and 500-600 or only 500-600. Air is about a third as dense at 500 C as at 20 C.
