Where can I find out how to design a double notched beam in a fin plate connection against LTB, Would it be possible to just design the Web against LTB as a simple rectangular plate using the approach given in the following link However, the question arises as to what should I assumes the effective length of the beam to be?

Thanks

I've got nothing to back it up but I was tauch to treat the fin as fixed at a distance into the non-notched beam of 3x the vertical depth of the notch.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

I'm not familiar with the code you are using. The rare occasion I have calculated this.....I've just used 'Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain'. In the 6th edition, they have several formulas (see p. 680) for a rectangular beam. (The effective length used is from support to support.)

Since that isn't code.....you'd have to use a SF. For LTB.....a SF of 2 or 3 is enough.

The more worrisome thing with one of those things is localized buckling......if it's thin enough. I'd check that closely.

For the design of fin plate connections I use SCI publication P358 - Simple joints to Eurocode 3, freely available at Link.

There are some recommendations for the LTB stability of a double notched beam, regarding its length, restrained state and notch dimensions. When some of these conditions fall outside of P358's scope, it provides additional references.
