I have an existing LVL 14"x3.5" with a span of 18'. Applied moment is 300k-in. The last 6' of the beam has been significantly deteriorated by water damage. It is the contractors desire to leave as much of the existing beam in place as possible due to its situation over HVAC, electrical, etc. Subsequently, he asked me if he could simply remove the outer 6-feet and splice on a new section. Note another LVL perpidicularly frames flush into the one of concern in the area of deterioration. Its is supported by light gage hanger secured into the area I need to remove. The other side of the beam is unencombered.

Generally, I had planned to sister a new LVL of similar properties to the back side of the existing joist. I calculated the load on the bolts by dividing the applied moment by the approximate 8-inch moment arm of the force couple between splice fasteners in tension and compression, which resulted in the requirement for an absorbatent number of fasteners makeing the splice unfeasible.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to an alternative for splicing this beam? Another suggestion for theory in transfering loads across the joined members? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
