3 ply LVL to a 2x4 built up column. No uplift. Do you add a column cap connector, or just allow toe nails. beam has side framing rafters, so not any lateral movement to worry about.

I wasn't meaning to imply I always use post caps, I use them on a case by case basis, was just giving some examples of when needed and there are plenty of more reasons to consider using CC's. In my area it's hit or miss on when contractors complain about CC's. Many times when I have a beam sitting on 2x's I am framing perp to a wall and actually add studs each side of the column/beam and nail directly from the stud to the beam.

I don't spec them for flush framed gravity only conditions. I use a similar detail to what Aesur is talking about. It's one thing to spec a cap for a single beam on a small project. But when you're doing huge apartments where you have hundred(s) of multiply beams the contractors absolutely scrutinize and push back on stuff like this. Even with the most basic AC/ACE/BC caps. The CCQ/ECCU caps are indeed massive. Ditto for some of their bigger hangers like the HGUS with like 50 SDS screws. I try to sharpen my pencil a little bit.
