What is the difference between a Standard Generator and a LVT Generator? Kato's Generator Selection Chart indicates that a 350 kW Standard Generator can start a 50 HP motor with a 15% drop in initial voltage. If a LVT Generator is used than a 250 kW could start the motor with a 15% drop in initial voltage. Anyone know difference between a Standard and LVT generator. Does the LVT generator have a "beefed up exciter" maybe?

I'm not familiar with what an "LVT" generator is, since a quick review of the KATO site doesn't show it, but since most of the time any KATO generator model starting with an "L" is actually a Leroy-Somer product (except the new LCF), what you may be looking at is a "partner alternator" branded for a manufacturer or distributor, both KATO and Leroy do this quite a bit.

The size to voltage drop comparison looks a lot like comparing a SE or shunt type generator to a PM or AREP type generator, here is a nice explanation of the differences,

Hope that helps, Mike L
