I have been trying to do what appeared to be an easy task.

I need to magnetize a plain carbon steel nut. I have a Magnaflux inspection machine whose coil I have been using to try to induce a field, but I have had absolutely no luck whatsoever. I have also been trying using a Neo. magnet to do the same. No luck there either.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

If you want to permanently magnetize the nut, and it is really plain carbon steel, no luck, it won't.
Plain carbon steel, as pure iron, magnetizes only under the action of an externally applied magnetic field.

Thanks Prex. That explains a lot. Would you happen to have a material recommendation that I could use that would allow permanent magnetization?
 
Try with a high strength nut: Mn steels are proner to maintaining magnetism. However if you need a strong, stable, repeatable and realiable magnetization you should turn into a material for (metallic) permanent magnets.
How do you want to magnetize it (what direction: axial, radial,...?): this might be important for your application.
