Hello, can someone tell me what are the main issues to use high power power supplies, larger then 1kW, is it heat?

Thanks.

Thanks Keith, but can you explain a little bit more, sorry my power supply knowledge is almost 0.
How come that a high power power supply get's more warm then let's say 500W?

Efficiency I understand with such high power.

Can you explain also a little bit more about Protection, Fidelity, noise and safety?

Thanks in advance!

Power supplies for Servers, networking, Robotics and for example laser cutting.

Nothing is 100% efficient. So if your 500W PSU is 80% efficient, it puts out 100W of heat. If you have a 1000W power supply that is 80% efficient, it puts out 200W of heat. 200W > 100W...

But also as power ratings increase, efficiency often decreases because the types of circuits you can use inside of the PSU tend to change to make more use of magnetic components, which have more losses. So in the above example it's likely going to be 80% and 78%.

Larger supplies are often physically noisy and that can matter in a lab environment.

They can have more electrical noise in their output that could be a problem depending on what the supply is for.

Fidelity is the supply's response to load disturbances and how fast it recovers from them.

Protection is how the supply is protected from overloads and what it does about them. Some start smoking, some shut off, some 'fold back', and some have complex responses.

Side note: odd quirk of the site, the $'s made it act crazy, that's why I had to put it as "Code"
