A major fire and explosion at baumgarten in Austria is not good news just as it starts to get really cold in Europe...

This is a major gas connection hub for Austria, Italy and some other locations.

It demonstrates the UK's vulnerability to events overseas, whether accidental or orchestrated. A couple of nukes on outage, most of the big coalers closed down for political reasons, cloudy and still weather crippling the renewable generators, and then a commercial blow to the CCGT generators.

It will be interesting to see how this develops if gas supplies are impaired for a prolonged period, even if my PC is running from a genset in the garden.

UK is pretty diversified on gas supplies compared to some countries. Multiple interconnectors, still a reasonable amount of domestic production, two or three large LNG storage systesm set up precislyl for this sort of event.

Now power generation might be something completely different...

The LNG storage facilities aren't there to support generation, they are there for general distribution.
This is one critical weakness of CCGT plants in the system, there is no standby fuel.
If supply were tight and the weather turned cold who would get gas, homes or power plants?
What about gas supplies to hospitals, schools and such?
This is a major issue that the Greens don't want to talk about.

Apparently they got gas flowing again within 24 hours, but the explanation, even allowing for "non technical" speak looks rather odd.

The link to the website comes up with a 404 error

Failure of a quick connect door on a filter is what it sounds like to me. Now that would do some damage at 70 bar and release a shed load of gas.
If it was new and leaking and someone was there trying to fix it...??

Something like this I guess - this is supposed to be from the plant concerned.
