Making a conveyor chain

I need to make a chain for a conveyor. Now I have all the different components that go into a chain (roller, pin, link plate). I need to put these 3 components together (which is easy) and then pattern this assembly around 2 sprockets. Now after every fixed number of regular link plates, I need to insert a special link plate. How can I go about doing that, i.e. in a pattern, replace certain instances of an entity with a different part?
