Has anybody had experience designing on-site septic for mining/oil man-camps with about 200 people in the Dakotas. One issue is there is no receiving stream, as the area drains to a local depression/wetland. I'm trying figure out what is typically done in this area. Obviously, a leach field or mound system would be to large because of the GPD loading.

Thanks!

What is your design flow?

I'm not sure of your regulations out there, but from the sound of it, subsurface discharge is the only method with your situation. Therefore, two thoughts:

- can you use multiple mounds or leach fields for your situation? You can design your pump station dosing volume accordingly and discharge it a specific mound.
- can you use alternative designs such as infiltrator systems or eljen to reduce your absorption area?

I appreciate the responses.

The design flows are probably 250 gpd per person. I was thinking about designing a Stablization Pond.

250 gpd per person! 25 maybe? 50 at the most.

Maybe I have a misunderstanding of what a man-camp is... but 250 gpd seems awfully excessive.

Yes, 250 gpd is probably too large. I was thinking about municipal water demand. The Civil Engineering Reference Manual says about 75-130 gpcd (gal per cap per day). With that, I'm looking at 26,000 gpd.

75-130 still seems high. I designed an RV summer camp last year and we used 40gpd per site. Although, we had the ability to install flow meters.

What do they do at this man-camp? Is it a hotel like system or individual sites, similar to a campground?

OK, I did find a suggested sewage flow guide in the Ohio EPA 'Greenbook' that suggests 50 gpd for a Migration Labor Camp.
