Hi,

Only the three fabrication methods showed in the document below are permitted?

A fabricator want to fabricate a rectangular HSS by welding two plates (rolled in L section) in two corners of final HSS.

Thanks,

Daniel

I don't have the ASTM in front of me to confirm. But, isn't that a requirement of the ASTM that governs these HSS sections?

Now, it's not that you cannot create a box section a different way. But, it's no longer an HSS section and different design provisions may apply. Certainly you have greater residual stresses. Section properties would be a little difference as well. b/t ratios would be a little different. material properties would be different. et cetera.

Yes, the provisions are a bit different.

So, if a design a box section Can I weld the plates as I want?

If you want to make some custom composite sections knock yourself out; but do not expect them to follow any tabulated values for the sections you are trying to mimic.

Make sure you consider manufacturing. If you roll out a set of plates into Ls and weld them together along the length they won't be close to straight at the end of the process.
