Hello,

1. Is there any guidelines or rules of thumb on where exactly to put the manyway on the vertical separators, either 2 or 3 phase, and what their dimensions are?

2. do there volume really matter in affecting the residence times of the either light or heavy liquid depending on what your NIL and NLL are ?? (do i have to take that it into account ?)

Thank you

IMO, the Manways (MW)of the vessel are used for access for the fabrication, internal parts installation, inspection & repair, etc. The actual number and location of MW can be varied per size of the vessel and the internal accessibility.

Some general rules of thumb about the layout of manways on vertical vessels:

1) There are limitations on the acceptable internal diameter of the versus the vessel diameter. Vessel strength considerations limit the manway diameter to half of the vessel diameter. Manways of 18" to 30" are common

2) If the vessel is to be insulated, do not forget that the manway must project (i.e. have a nozzle neck) a short distance from the surface of the vessel. You must also allow room to remove nuts, studs and hardware. A nozzle projection of between 9 and 12 inches is common.

3) If the manway has a heavy cover, consider requiring a swing davit and an attachment tab at the top of the cover to allow access during maintenance

4) Consider designing access walkways in your layout to allow maintenance to the vessel interior. Locate the walkways so that the centerline of the manway is ~40 inches above the grating.

5) If the vessel is to have a "code nameplate" or some other identification feature, attach the plate on a seperate bracket just above the manway.
