I am updating my material database.
If anyone would like to add materials, please let me know and I will try to add.
It would help me save time if you have the material specs, and an image of the material, if you have it.
You can download the file from my site below.
Thanks,

Chris

How about some cast aluminum materials:
C355=.101 density
A356=.097 density

Wrought aluminum material:
2014=.101

Low Alloy Steel materials:
4130=.283 density
4140=.283 density
4340=.283 density

and other miscellaneous materials:

Leaded Bronze=.326 density
Carbon=.056 density

All above materials are commonly used in aerospace designs

Colin,
Can you be more specific on the Carbon?
Thanks

Chris,
I'll have to get back to you on that. It's been awhile since I worked with carbon. I think just a generic grade. What did you find?

pdybeck,
What do have available in carbon?

You know you guys.........we're going to have to take Chris out for a steak dinner for working on this. Oh......and for some beers too!

Material Properties are per ASTM specs when avalaible...

pdybeck,
I meant plain carbon graghite material. Used for bearings in the aerospace arena.

Chris,
Poco was the manufacture I dealt with in the past for carbon. my density might be off by little. Maybe make a generic material for this in the SW database.

Thanks guys.
I could make diamond for carbon, but it's hard to do.[bigsmile]

Chris,
How about adding some density for Printed Wiring Boards like:

Premix Thermoplastics PRE-ELEC® ESD 4100=0.0343 lb/in³

I would like to hear from of the electrical folks out there. They might be more specific than us mechanical guys.

I'll look into it. There are more than one mtl for PCB's. I will need to look more than just density.
Thanks.

Many materials for PCB's I imagine would be anisotropic (material response is dependent upon direction/orientation of a force relative to the material - think laminates/ply materials). You could not simply input a global modulus. You would need to define a modulus of elasticity for multiple directions/orientations. I think this is where some more serious FEA programs come into play. I think most of them come with some more serious libraries of materials and the ability to capture maerial properties for materials such as these. I mention this because the material database in SolidWorks is intended to work with Cosmos. I wonder if the material database can be carried over to a program like Cosmos Professional. Does the material database play nicely across those programs? Anyone in the know?

Pete

I have used these mtls in COSMOS and they worked well. Major aerospace companies and the US military bought into the FEA we did.

Chris, can the material database in basic SolidWorks "scale" up to cover these types of materials, or is it when you get into evaluating these types of materials/scenarios you just bag the solidworks material database and use a more extensive library. If the latter is the case, it would make more sense for us to submit an enhancement request for SolidWorks to set up the materials database to scale up to these situations so that we can put our time into adding material info to an animal that has the chance of being around for a while...

Pete

Pete,
I don't understand what you mean by "scale" up.
Thanks,

Chris

Lets say you spend all this time adding material info to the SolidWorks material database and it works great with solidWorks and Cosmos Designer. But lets say down the road you start using an FEA package that can analyze the materials that are anisotropic (laminates/plys/non-linear behaving materials). Can you still use the SolidWorks materials database that you spent all that time adding info to, or are you stuck re-creating all that information into another library/database that works with your more advanced FEA package. That is what I mean by scaling up...

Pete

With the database I created, I have been able to use it in COSMOSWorks & FloWorks without problems. I think it was up to SolidWorks 2005 we had to have a separate databse. Now, it's just one for all.
For a check, if anyone has CW or FW, please use the mtls and let me know how it works for you.
Thanks.

Chris,

Can CosmosWorks analyze materials that are anisotropic in nature? If so, does it just add fields to the SolidWorks material database? I haven't seen anything in the SolidWorks material database that shows this ability...
