Hello,

The Canadian company I am currently working for has all their piping Material as "grades" when looking back at ISO drawings. I am tasked with installing and purchasing two slip-on valves in order to replace the weld neck flanges (Grade 248, CatI) in the field.

When i requested quotes for the flanges, made RF GRD 248 CAT I, all the manufactures replied offering a A105N, in terms of specs, these two materials are quite similar. However, I was informed to ensure that the material is dual certified, I tried googling the term without much luck.

What is a dual certification, and is it presented as a document that then has to be submitted for QC&QA?

Thank you

Some similar material specifications have overlapping requirements with each other. A dual certified material is a material that can meet the requirements of each specification independently. For example, if a metal was required to contain 21-24% Chromium by one specification and 24-26% by another, a material sample that contains 24% Cr could be dual certified, given that all other requirements were the same between specs. Your material supplier should be able to assist you in documentation. You must specify when ordering that you want the material certified under both specs.

Grade 248 Cat I suggests to me that the Code Of Construction might be CSA Z662. A number of companies ask for dual certification on ASME / ANSI materials so that they can be sure to meet the metallurgical and notch toughness requirements of the Pipeline Code and the ASME Code simultaneously. That said, I would view it as unnecessary for Cat I materials of similar grade (SMYS). In this instance, A105N is completely acceptable unless I am missing something.

Dual certified woul mean a marking on the component and its mill cert like:

"ASTM A105N / Z245.12 Grade 248 Cat I".
