Material selection book? 1

Dear Eng-Tips community,

I am a mechanical engineer and started to be involved in material selection issues (Oil and Gas) in my work, I would really appreciate if you can advice me which kind books are valuable in this topic, it shouldn't be very basic.
I found this book "Corrosion and Materials in the Oil and Gas Industries" but i don't know if it is a good one or if there is something better?

It is my opinion that a single book containing all material recommendations and trade-offs for this industry would be the "holy grail" of materials engineering.

The major problem of materials engineering, IMHO is that information is so fragmented and can be found in so many sources.

Remember, a material that has been suitable for a particular service........ can corrode rapidly and almost gleefully with a small change in temperature or pH.

Its a tricky and frustrating business....

Often the best info comes from vendors /suppliers. Conversely that is maybe not such a bad way to assess a supplier.

For Stellite products I would suggest Louw DeJong - He is very knowledgeable, honest and a genuinely nice person.

I am really aware of the problems with selecting material and I know it is not an easy task, and either you rely on your experience which I don't have till now, or in my case you just do your home work and search in some books and sources befor to come up with an solution.

You maybe ought to have a Machinery's Handbook, Thomas Glover's Pocket Ref and a copy of the CRC Handbook of chemistry and Physics. You can get the first and third second hand really cheap.

ASM books can be o.k.

Maybe buy a Material's Handbook. There are several under that name.

Between API RP 571 and Energy Institute Guidance on corrosion management in oil and gas production and processing, you will get an idea of most of the failure modes and corrosion control methods that serve as inputs to the materials selection process. If you want to round it off with a dedicated subsea publication, then EEMUA 194 is the one.

Can you share with us what type of an equipment you are dealing with material selection? Is this piping, valves, tanks, pressure vessels, rotating equipment, or something else?
